Still celebrating #spring, but also #WorldPoetryDay! #Momager’s always been a fan of #poetry, even writing quite a bit in her younger years. Now she’s started a collection of ButtonPoetry’s offerings. All of their authors are brilliantly talented, ridiculously inspiring, and a pure joy to read and even watch. I like to nap while Momager watches spoken word performances on youtube. I’m learning that I don’t always have to make noise to be seen, that even my silence has a spine, a rumble and says, ‘I’m here’ in its native tongue. - Rudy Francisco rudyfrancisco tells beautiful, very human narratives. Every piece is a provocation. Every poem is a call to introspect. I’ve only experienced Rudy Francisco’s poetry through his spoken word pieces I’ve seen on IG. To be gifted with his book is so truly special. He writes about human stories and the politics of race, gender, class and religion with such candor and courage. His poems read less like a TED talk and more of honest (sometimes hurtful) confessions. Reading his poetry is like having conversations have with a friend while sitting on the porch steps or the hood of a car during golden hour, the topics pendulum between social commentary and love longings. His poem “Horizon” shook me to the core. It’s been awhile since I’ve had a poem move me to tears and take my breath away so suddenly. Having someone articulate fears I’ve been cradling so succinctly and with so much empathy made me feel seen. It “weakened gravity”, to borrow his words. His words were indeed, helium. (Thank you, Rudy.) Highly recommended. 10/10. 🎈 📕: Helium by Rudy Francisco, published by buttonpoetry 🍵: Matcha Almond Latte 🌿: Neon Pothos #matcha #matchatones #buttonpoetry #rudyfrancisco #rudyfranciscopoetry #helium #matchalover #poetrybook

COMPOSITION by Junious Ward is such a beautiful and powerful collection of poems. Personal biography, family photos, historical records, current events, and uncommon poetic shapes all mix together in a way that feels unified and clearly shaped. Taken together, it's a moving book about grief, identity, violence, and resilience. Thanks to netgalley and buttonpoetry for the ARC and for the opportunity to spend some time with such impactful words. #Book17of2023 #ParisReads2023 #booksofinstagram #booksofig #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #booklover #readersofinsta #readersofinstagram #readersofig #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreview #bibliophile #igreads #instaread #bookpost #newreads #booknerd #ParisReadsRecommendations #readpoetry #poetryreading #advancereaderscopy #ownvoices #readmorepoetry #blackhistorymonth #blackpoets jward2030

But good people: Revenge is more than spite. I do not peddle simple
spite; it's only spite when the war is over. And our wars rage.

So rage back, my friends. Buy a bag of spiders today, and rage back. I can only describe this book as odd and extraordinary! At the start, I wasn't sure I would like this, and I couldn't understand the setting; we're listening to a robot whose memories were recovered from a post-apocalyptic world, and as we do so we follow 2 poets traveling across the said world, as poet-bards. I'm not clear on that bit, and I will need to read the start again. Either way, Myhre uses that setting to explore racism, homophobia, poetry, sexism, and violence without naming names. This setting gives him a lot of freedom to explore things, for example, 'Revenge is the best Success' is a great poem, but works even better in this setting rather than a more standard book of poems. The poems on Hen March are great, but an entire book on Hen March may not have worked the way these poems in this setting did and how they made us switch between the past and the present. I also loved how the poets cross paths with so many unreasonable people and are brushed aside every time they speak the truth; it's indicative of not only the role art has in our lives but also of how truth still exists, someone does still speak it, even when it looks like the majority doesn't agree with it. I also really appreciate Myhre’s poetry because it sounds really lovely to read out loud. I'm not a big fan of poetry that doesn’t sound right when you read it out loud. I hate that. This isn’t like that, which I love! And if you’re wondering why you should buy a bag of spiders, hit the link in my bio to read the poem in question! #QOTD: What’s your favourite NetGalley book? #bookstagramofmine #book #books #poetrybook #netgalley #arc #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookreviewer #buttonpoetry #KyleGuanteTranMyhre #poet #modernpoetry #poetryquotes #poetryexcerpt #bookblogger #bookblogger #bookstagrampak #bookstagrampakistan #bookish #booklove #bookreviews #bookreviewsofinstagram #bookstagram #bookdragon #booklover #bookreader

I’ve had the most lovely, introverted Saturday so far, my friends: went for a run, started laundry, did the dishes, cleaned up some book stacks, and jammed out to some Broadway soundtracks. It’s been good for my soul. ❤️ And now, while waiting for said laundry to be finished, I’m watching ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL on Netflix (and loving it!). While I frequently ask what you are reading…instead, what are you watching these days? Side note review // I read this compilation of poetry a few months ago after following the author’s spoken word via Youtube. REVENGE BODY was both a quick read - but one definitely meant to be savored. It largely explores the themes of Black identity, body image, and mental health. I would highly recommend for anyone who is a fan of spoken word, is interested in exploring these themes, or loves a good poetry collection. Born in a Second Language by Akosua Zimba Afiriyie-Hwedie [a review.] For such a short book, this one is one of the most powerful poetry collections I have ever read. Akosua Zimba Afiriyie-Hwedie has an incredible and unique voice of someone with beautiful identities (complex in the way they intersect). The words written speak with intention, urgency, loss, joy, sorrow, confidence, and beauty. I cannot adequately review this to the level it deserves so I will leave you with a few excerpts. Please go read this. You won't regret a single minute of it. "i am a non-citizen/in a country/ with its bootstrap down my throat/ 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦/ is written in my passport as a visa expiry date/𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦/ is afraid to be questioned/ in a back room at immigration/ 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘩𝘰𝘮𝘦/ reminds me while I am here/ I need/to train myself constantly/ to make room to leave" "Home is often explained by distance/ because distant things in view are smaller/ supposed to make home/ easier to pick up and carry - put down and leave/ 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦,/ 𝘒𝘦 𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘨 means 𝘐 𝘢𝘮 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦..." And of course, the cover art and design by Lebohang Motaung and Victoria Alvarez, respectively, are perfection. CW: xenophobia, grief ID: The front cover of the book depicting a blue background, young Black person with long braids tied and running down their back, with a mirror in front of them, and looking off to the left is shown. The book lies on a green, leafy plant with a white background. Photo is taken from a bird's-eye view. 🏷️ #BornInASecondLanguage #AkosuaZimbaAfiriyieHwedie #Poetry #PoetryReview #Chapbook #ButtonPoetry #ExplodingPineconeBooks #ChicagoPublicLibrary #ChicagoBookstagram #ChicagoBooksta #ReadDiversely #ImmigrantBooks #PoetryRecommendation #PlantsAndBooks #BooksAndPlants #PoetryOnIdentity #ImmigrantAuthor #AfricanPoetry #ReadThis #PoetryBooks #ipreview via preview.app #PoetryChapbook #FebruaryReads #2022Reading

Happy National Poetry Month! . Y’all. Steven Willis is GIFTED. This is some raw talent & vulnerable poetry. I had visceral reactions reading the poems. His book speaks to systemic racism & specifically the anti-Blackness that is pervasive in the United States & in his home city of Chicago. I’m floored by his talent. You can HEAR the slam poetry/spoken word as you’re reading. And the dedications to activists & victims of police violence/the militarized state/white supremacy that are at the beginning of many of the poems… it’s powerful. I know this is a collection of poems that I’ll be revisiting. & I would absolutely go to a reading of his. Wow. Thank you for writing this & sharing your lived experiences, Steven Willis. I highly encourage everyone to pick up this book when it’s published on April 26th! . Also… Nipsey Hussle was mentioned in one of the poems so of course I had to go to the Nipsey mural in my neighborhood for this picture! . Thank you to NetGalley & Button Poetry for the eARC of this book. Opinions are freely given & my own. . . . . 🏷 #NationalPoetryMonth #Poetry #ChicagoPoetry #APeculiarPeople #ButtonPoetry #StevenWillis #NetGalley #NetGalleyReview #NetGalleyReviewer #BookOfPoetry #NYCReadingPals #NYCBookPals #ReadBlackBooks #ReadBlackAuthors #ReadBlackPoets #DiversifyYourShelf #DiversifyYourReads #DiverseSpines #Bookstagram #NYCReaders #NYCBookstagram #BrooklynBookstagram #BookRecommendation #eARC #eARCReview #ARCReview #ARCReviewer #Bookfluencer #Bibliophile #PoetryMonth
